首先，要先了解測驗的說法。在英文中，最常聽到用來表示測驗的單字就是test，test是考試的統稱，可以用來泛指各種類型的測驗，也可以作動詞使用。
 
另外一個常聽到的是exam，是examination的簡稱，意思也是指考試，特別是指很多人集中在一起的考試，例如：midterm exam 期中考、final exam 期末考。
 
而quiz通常指的是小考，如果是隨堂考，則可以說：a pop quiz。
 
如果要考隨堂小考的話，老師可以說：
◆ Let’s take a quiz. 我們來考小考。
◆ We are going to have a simple test. 我們要考個簡單的測驗。
◆ We’ll have a listening test later. 我們等等要考聽力測驗。
 
 

在公布考試的時候，通常也會一併說明考試範圍，例如：
◆ The exam covers lesson 8 to 12. 考試範圍是第八課到第十二課。
◆ There will be a pop quiz about what we learned today tomorrow. 明天會抽考今天學到的內容。
◆ The exam questions will be based on what we have learned. 考試題目會出自我們學到的內容。
 
在授課或考前複習的時候，老師可以特別提醒學生：
◆ This part will be included in the exam. 這個部分考試會考。
◆ This section is very important; please study it thoroughly. 這個地方很重要，請熟讀。
◆ This will be on the exam. 這題考試會考。
◆ This would make a good exam question. 這題考試很愛考。
◆ Please prepare well for the test. 請好好準備考試。
 
 

在考試時，時間安排是很重要的，在宣布考試或發下考卷的時候，記得告訴學生考試所需要的時間，讓他們可以安排作答的順序、比重。可以說：
◆ It’ll have about 20 minutes for the test. 考試時間約20分鐘。
◆ You will take the exam for 50 minutes. 考試時間50分鐘。
 
考試過程中，老師也可以提醒剩餘的時間：
◆ There are 5 minutes left. 還有5分鐘。
◆ 10 more minutes until the exam ends. 再10分鐘考試時間到。
 
而當考試時間到的時候，則可以說：
◆ Time is up. 時間到。
◆ Stop writing; time is up. 時間到，請停筆。
 
 

除了時間掌控外，細心也很重要，老師可以簡單說：
◆ Answer carefully. 提醒學生仔細作答。
◆ Remember to check your answers. 記得檢查答案。
◆ Please make sure every question has been answered. 請確認是否每題都有作答。
 
而等到考試結束時，老師不用一張張的收卷，可以跟學生說：
◆ Pass the test papers to the front. 把考卷傳到前面來。
◆ The last person in each row will now collect the answer sheets. 現在，每排的最後一個同學起來收答案卷。
 
而考試中最常出現的不好行為就是作弊，作弊的英文是cheat。制止作弊行為，可以說：
◆ Do not turn your head during the exam. 考試時不要轉頭。
◆ Do not talk during the exam. 考試時不要講話。
◆ Do not peek at others' answers. 不要偷看別人的答案。
 
另外補充說明，小抄的英文是a crib sheet或a cheat sheet。
 
 

Teacher: Okay, let’s take a test now. Please pass the test papers down.
Student: Oh no…
Teacher: Come on, everyone. Close your books.
 
老師：好，現在來考試。把考卷傳下去。
學生：喔不……
老師：來吧，大家把書本闔上。
 
 

Teacher: Do you have any questions on this practice exam?
Student: Why is option C in question five incorrect?
Teacher: Ok, listen to me carefully.
 
老師：你對這次模擬考還有什麼疑問嗎？
學生：為什麼第五題的選項C是錯的？
老師：好的，你仔細聽我說。
