■ 通常用以表示「短暫到訪某處」，或者指火車等交通運輸工具
「沿途停靠某處」。
call down 祈求，訓斥

■ call down既可表示「向人祈求某事」，也可以表示「訓斥、責罵」。

■ call someone up表示「打電話給某人」，也可以指「軍隊徵召入伍」。

別擔心，外婆的手術進行得很順利。
■ clockwork指「鐘錶的機械」，所以go like clockwork代表「像鐘錶一樣持續且穩定地進行」。
go off 響起，開火，停止運轉
The gangster tried to fire but his submachine gun failed to go off.
歹徒試著開槍，但他的衝鋒槍卻沒有響起射出。
■ 槍枝開火，或是停電時機器停止運轉時可以用go off。
go the extra mile for sb/sth 加把勁，加倍努力，不遺餘力地
His teacher really went the extra mile for her students before this test.
他的老師在這次考試前不遺餘力地幫助學生。
■ go the extra mile for sb/th指「為某人／某事做出額外的努力」。
go to the wall 失敗，破產，陷於絕境
After a series of financial crises, the company finallywent to the wall.
在一連串的財務危機之後，這家公司宣告破產。
■ go to the wall也可以用於形容一敗塗地。
in mint condition 完好無缺，狀況非常好
This 1961 Austin Mini Countryman is still in mint condition.

■ 通常用來形容舊的東西看起來就像新的一樣。

■ 一般出納或會計的表格裡，支出就是用紅色數字，收入則用黑色，所以 in the red就表示「財政赤字、虧損」之意。
put across 弄清楚
William didn’t put across what he wanted to say at the meeting.
威廉沒有好好弄清楚他在會議中想說的話。
put away 收好，儲存，拋棄
It is time to put away all these conservative concepts.
該是丟掉這些傳統觀念的時候了。
■ conservative 表示「傳統的，守舊的」。
put my foot in it with sb 冒犯某人
I think I put my foot in it with Sharon, I didn’t know she just broke up with her boyfriend.
我想我冒犯到雪倫了，我不知道她剛跟男友分手。
■ 同樣是敘述「把腳放到某處」的片語put…in somebody's shoes也很常見，但意思完全相反，是形容「為某人設身處地地著想」。
put on the dog 炫耀，擺闊
I don’t like Kevin because he is always putting on the dog.
我不喜歡凱文，因為他總是喜歡擺闊。
■ 以前有錢人家的女士，往往花很多錢去買一隻稀有品種的狗，然後抱在腿上來顯示自己的闊氣，所以 put on the dog 就引申為「炫耀，擺闊」的意思。
put the cart before the horse本末倒置
No, it’s not the reason that he quit his job. You put the cart before the horse.
不，這不是他辭掉工作的原因，你本末倒置了。
■ 馬車通常是由馬匹帶頭拉動車輛，所以如果put the cart before the horse，意即「把車廂放在馬前面」，就是用來形容人本末倒置喔！
